Behind the Scenes: Inside Our NYC Knitwear Factory
There’s something special about walking into our knitwear factory in the heart of NYC’s Garment District. Maybe it’s the hum of the machines, the rhythm of skilled hands at work, or the fact that places like this—where garments are crafted with care, not mass-produced overseas—are nearly extinct.
Last Friday, I stopped by to check on our latest production run, and as always, I was reminded of why we choose to manufacture right here in New York City.
A Hidden Gem in the Garment District
If you were walking down the street, you’d never guess what’s behind the door of this unassuming coffee shop. Yes, that’s right—our knitwear factory entrance is inside a café. Feels very Hong Kong to me!
It’s an unexpected but fitting entry point to a place filled with craftsmanship and history. Once you step through, you’re transported into a workshop where every Firebird sweater is carefully knit, linked, and finished by hand—just blocks from where so much of American fashion history was made.
What’s on the Knitting Machines Now?
Right now, the factory team is putting the finishing touches on an updated version of one of our customer favorites—our Cotton Cashmere Sweater Hoodie. If you’ve loved our Coral and Blue versions, you’ll be excited to know that Bright Red and Aquamarine are coming soon. The same heirloom-quality Italian yarn, the same perfect lightweight feel—just in fresh, bold new colors.

Beyond these, they’re also working on some brand-new styles that I can’t wait to share with you—but that’s a story for another day.

Making kids’ knitwear in NYC isn’t just rare—it’s nearly unheard of. The Garment District was once the beating heart of American fashion, but as production moved offshore, these factories disappeared one by one. The few that remain are run by dedicated artisans, keeping a tradition alive against all odds.
