Designed in San Francisco. Made in NYC. Always better than basic.

Nine is the age the shopping changes. Most nine-year-olds wear a size 8-9, some are already in 10-11, and nearly all of them have an opinion about what goes on in the morning. Clothes for 9 year olds have to clear two people now: the parent paying for them and the kid who decides whether they ever leave the drawer.

Everything here is made from organic cotton or a cotton-cashmere blend, in small batches in New York City, and sized 8-9 and 10-11 for this age. Prices run $45 to $118.

    What A Nine-Year-Old Actually Wears

The pieces in this collection are the ones that get worn on repeat at this age rather than saved for occasions.

Bottoms first, because that is where nine-year-olds are hardest on clothes. The Studio Denim Pant looks sharp and is still very comfortable, with a drawstring waist, and the new Vintage Drill Pant is the black neutral that goes with everything else here. Every Firebird pant has a drawstring waist with no buttons or zippers, denim included. For weekends, the fleece joggers.

The tees are the base layer: the Three Feathers Tee, the Dropped Shoulder Tee, and a long sleeve graphic tee for cooler months.

Over them, a knit. The new Snake Intarsia Sweater and the Tree Intarsia Sweater have the motif knit into the fabric, the cotton-cashmere hoodie sweater sits between a sweater and a hoodie, and the chunky knits are for the coldest mornings.

    Sizing For A Nine-Year-Old

Most nine-year-olds wear 8-9, which is cut for a child 51 to 54 inches tall and 64 to 72 pounds, with a 27-inch chest and a 24.5-inch sleeve.

A tall or long-limbed nine-year-old is usually in 10-11, cut for 54 to 57 inches and 72 to 81 pounds. Sleeve length is the giveaway before height is. If the cuffs are riding up the forearm on the current size, the next one is already due.

Age labels are a starting point and nothing more at nine, because two kids the same age can be four inches apart. Measure height and weight and read across the size guide instead of buying by birthday.

Between sizes, size up. A sweater or a tee worn slightly roomy at nine is a year of wear. Pants are the exception, since a hem that drags gets stepped on.

    When The Kid Has Opinions

Around eight or nine, cute stops being the word that works. Kids at this age start noticing what reads as young and rejecting it, and a drawer full of pieces they will not wear is more expensive than anything on this page.

What tends to survive that filter is plain construction and restraint. No cartoon licensing, no slogans they will be embarrassed by in six months, no fit that reads as little-kid. The graphics here are original Firebird artwork, drawn small and used sparingly, which is why they tend to get worn rather than argued about.

The practical version: let them pick the colorway and hold the line on the piece. That is usually enough for both people to get what they want out of the transaction.

Made To Survive A Year At Nine

Nine-year-olds are hard on clothes in a way toddlers are not. It is less about spills and more about volume, the same three favorites worn and washed until something gives out at the seams or the neckline.

The cotton here is GOTS certified, which covers the fiber and the processing rather than just the crop, and it carries no chemical softening finishes. What that means in practice is that the softness comes from the yarn and does not wash out after a month. The knits are knit in New York City, and the tees, fleece and denim are made there too. The cotton-cashmere hoodie sweater is its own blend, 85% Egyptian Giza cotton and 15% cashmere.

Washing is ordinary. Cold water, like colors, gentle cycle. Tumble dry low on the tees, fleece and denim; lay the knits flat to dry rather than hanging them, since a wet knit stretches at the shoulder under its own weight.

When a size is finally done, Pass It On resells the piece to another family, which is the part of the math that makes a $98 pant reasonable at an age when kids grow two to three inches a year.

    School Days And Everything After

Nine is mostly a school wardrobe, and the pieces here are built around that week. Our guide to pants for school versus play covers where each kind earns its place, and building a capsule wardrobe is the version for parents who would rather buy eight pieces than twenty.

Clothes For 9 Year Olds FAQs

What Size Does A 9 Year Old Wear?

Usually 8-9, which fits a child 51 to 54 inches and 64 to 72 pounds. Taller nine-year-olds are in 10-11. Measure rather than going by age.

What Should A 9 Year Old Wear To School?

Drawstring denim or drill pants, a tee, and a knit or hoodie to layer over it. That combination covers a classroom that runs warm, a playground at recess, and a walk home in the cold.

Are These Clothes For Boys Or Girls?

Both. The cuts are unisex across the size run, which is also what makes them straightforward to hand down between siblings.

What Are The Clothes Made Of?

GOTS-certified organic cotton on the tees and knits, organic cotton fleece, and organic Japanese cotton on the denim and drill. The hoodie sweater is a separate cotton-cashmere blend. No wool and no chemical finishes.

How Do I Buy For A Nine-Year-Old Who Has Strong Opinions?

Bring them into the color choice and keep the decision about the piece. Plain construction and small graphics tend to clear the bar at this age better than anything loud.

How Should These Clothes Be Washed?

Cold water, like colors, gentle cycle. Tumble dry low on tees, fleece and denim, and lay knits flat to dry.

What If They Are Between Two Sizes?

Size up on tops and knits, which buys a year of wear. Stay true to size on pants so the hem does not drag.
