Three Kinds of Kids Hoodie, Depending on the Weather

Not every hoodie does the same job, and this collection covers three different ones.

Organic cotton fleece is the workhorse: brushed on the inside, substantial enough for cold mornings, and the right weight to layer under a winter coat. The zip-up fleece hoodies come in navy and gray with contrast zippers, and the Firebird graphic hoodie is a pullover in heather gray.

Double-sided Italian French terry is the lighter option. Same structure, less bulk, better for shoulder-season temperatures and for kids who overheat in fleece. It's the one that gets worn from September through May.

Cotton-cashmere hoodie sweaters sit in between. They're knit rather than sewn from fleece, so they read a little more finished than a sweatshirt, but they still go in the washing machine. Available in many different colors, from soft blue and ivory to dusty rose. If your kid wants a hood on everything and you want the outfit to hold up at a family dinner, this is the compromise.

What to Look For in Children's Hoodies

Most children's hoodies are cotton-polyester blends that pill at the cuffs by the second month. The construction details are where the difference shows up.

    • GOTS-certified organic cotton, spun from Peruvian Pima for the fleece styles
    • PFAS-free, with no flame retardants or synthetic coatings
    • Machine washable, straight into the regular cold cycle
    • Made in small batches in New York City and Los Angeles
    • Ribbed cuffs and hems that hold their shape through repeat washing
    • Cut to work for boys and girls, and easy to hand down or resell through Pass It On

    Kids Hoodie Care

A kids hoodie takes more abuse than almost anything else in the drawer, and it lasts longer with a little routine. The full organic cotton care guide has the details:

    • Wash cold on a gentle cycle, inside out to protect the graphic
    • Mild, fragrance-free detergent, no bleach or fabric softener
    • Zip the zipper before washing, so it doesn't catch on other pieces
    • Tumble low or hang to dry
    • Air out between wears rather than washing after every one

    Pairs Well With

Hoodies layer over almost everything else in the range. Pair them with graphic tees and denim pants for school, or with joggers and sweatpants for practice and weekends. For crewneck styles without the hood, see sweatshirts and sweaters. Shopping the toddler range? See toddler hoodies in 2T–5T.

    FAQs

What Are Firebird Kids' Hoodies Made Of?

The fleece styles use Peruvian Pima cotton, and the lighter styles use double-sided Italian French terry. Both are GOTS-certified organic cotton. The hoodie sweaters are a cotton-cashmere blend.

What's the Difference Between a Fleece Hoodie and a Cotton-Cashmere Hoodie Sweater?

Construction. The fleece hoodie is sewn from brushed cotton fleece, like a classic sweatshirt. The hoodie sweater is knit, so it has more drape and a more finished look. Both are machine washable and both have a hood.

Do You Offer Zip-Up and Pullover Hoodies?

Both. The fleece and French terry zip-ups are easier for younger kids to manage on their own, and the pullovers are the warmer option since there's no zipper opening down the front.

Are These Hoodies Warm Enough for Winter?

The fleece styles layer well under a winter coat, and work on their own as an outer layer in milder weather. In real cold, treat them as a mid-layer rather than a jacket.

Where Are Your Kids' Hoodies Made?

In small batches in New York City and Los Angeles.
